Every day we read about the incidents of Heist in the newspapers. Many of these thieves are caught and some are not. But there are many such heists which always remain a mystery. So let us know about some such mysterious heists of Indian history.
The Antwerp Diamond Heist (2003)
This heist took place in Antwerp, Belgium, but involved a group of Indian criminals. The criminals, led by a man named Leonardo Notarbartolo, broke into the Antwerp Diamond Center and made away with diamonds, gold, and other precious stones worth an estimated $100 million. The exact details of the heist and the whereabouts of the stolen loot remain a mystery.
The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum Heist (1990)
While not directly in India, this heist involved a gang led by an Indian art dealer named Subhash Kapoor. The gang stole 13 valuable artworks, including paintings by Vermeer and Rembrandt, from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, USA. The stolen artworks have never been recovered, and the case remains unsolved.
The Great Train Robbery (1974)
This infamous heist took place in India’s state of Maharashtra. A gang of robbers, led by a man named Shantaram Dhanaji Jadhav, intercepted the Saharsa-Danapur Express train and made off with a significant amount of cash and jewelry. The robbers escaped, and the loot was never recovered. The case remains a mystery.

The Hatton Garden Heist (2015)
Though not directly related to India, this heist involved a British criminal of Indian origin named Danny Jones. The Hatton Garden Safe Deposit Company in London was targeted, and the thieves drilled through the vault wall and made off with an estimated £14 million worth of jewelry and other valuables. The stolen items and the fate of the criminals involved are still subjects of speculation and investigation.
The Nizam’s Jewellery Heist (2018)
In a daring heist, thieves broke into the Nizam Museum in Hyderabad, India, and stole a priceless collection of jewelry, including diamond necklaces, tiaras, and emerald bracelets, belonging to the Nizam of Hyderabad, one of India’s wealthiest royals. The stolen jewelry was valued at several crores of rupees. The case is still under investigation, and the stolen jewels have not been recovered.
